Disorders in Pregnancy You Should Know

Disorders in Pregnancy

Being a mom is not only the most respectful decision in a woman’s life but also a dangerous choice if her health is not good. Let’s find out the 5 disorders a mother may have to suffer after nurturing a child in her womb.

Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

Blood pressure is the force that a person’s blood exerts against the walls of their blood vessels. This pressure depends on the resistance of the blood vessels and how hard the heart has to work.

If your blood pressure is extremely high, there may be certain symptoms to look out for, including:

  • Severe headaches
  • Nosebleed
  • Fatigue or confusion
  • Vision problems
  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Blood in the urine
  • Pounding in your chest, neck, or ears

The best way to know if your blood pressure is high is through regular checkups. You can also monitor blood pressure at home. This is especially important if you have a close relative who has high blood pressure.

Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)

UTIs are common infections that happen when bacteria, often from the skin or rectum, enter the urethra and infect the urinary tract.

Please contact your doctor right away if you have the symptoms below.

  • A burning feeling when you pee.
  • A frequent or intense urge to pee, even though little comes out when you do.
  • Cloudy, dark, bloody, or strange-smelling pee.
  • Feeling tired or shaky.
  • Fever or chills (a sign that the infection may have reached your kidneys)
  • Pain or pressure in your back or lower abdomen.

Females are at greater risk of developing a UTI than are males. Infection limited to your bladder can be painful and annoying. However, serious consequences can occur if a UTI spreads to your kidneys.

Doctors typically treat urinary tract infections with antibiotics. However, if possible, you should take steps to reduce your chances of getting a UTI in the first place.

Obesity and Weight Gain

Overweight and obesity are increasingly common conditions in the United States. Almost 70% of adults in the United States are overweight. And of those, about one-third are considered obese. Obesity is a serious chronic illness that can lead to type 2 diabetes, heart disease — two of the leading causes of kidney disease — as well as high blood cholesterol, cancers, and sleep disorders.

Being overweight or obese are both terms for having more body fat than what is considered healthy. These terms are used to identify people who are at risk for health problems from having too much body fat. However, the term “obese” generally means a much higher amount of body fat than “overweight.”

Infections.

An infection, according to Wikipedia, is the invasion of an organism’s body tissues by disease-causing agents, their multiplication, and the reaction of host tissues to the infectious agents and the toxins they produce. An infectious disease, also known as transmissible disease or communicable disease, is an illness resulting from an infection.

Infections can be caused by a wide range of pathogens, most prominently bacteria and viruses. Hosts can fight infections using their immune systems. Mammalian hosts react to infections with an innate response, often involving inflammation, followed by an adaptive response.

There are some of the infections that can be dangerous during pregnancy include:

  • Bacterial vaginosis (BV)
  • Group B strep (GBS)
  • Hepatitis.
  • Sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Toxoplasmosis.
  • Urinary tract infections.
  • Yeast infections.
  • Zika virus.

Mental Health Conditions

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

Pregnant women are vulnerable because of changes they experience in the stages of pregnancy that may affect their mental health. Mental health problems affect nearly one-fifth of pregnant women during the prenatal and postpartum periods, which could last up to a year, and may lead to poor health for the mother, father, and infant.

If you are having concerns about your mental health, first, know that you are not alone! Many women have mental health concerns and can cope very well with pregnancy and motherhood. Severe mental illness (bipolar affective disorder, severe depression, psychosis) may worsen during pregnancy and postpartum, so women with these illnesses should consider discussing with their health care provider before becoming pregnant.

Final Thought

If you’re thinking about getting pregnant, please keep in your mind those useful tips below from HCA Healthcare Today:

  • Make sure immunizations are up to date
  • Take a prenatal vitamin (especially folic acid) even before you get pregnant
  • Get consistent prenatal care
  • Exercise
  • Avoid risk factors
  • Know when to call your doctor with concerns
  • Ask about/manage chronic health conditions or medications prior to getting pregnant

One of the errors made by those who take gifts for pregnant women is the choice of some gifts and objects that only distract during pregnancy and do not bring significant value. Only choose gifts and articles that will be interesting for you and your wife, especially if she is a first-time mother.
