The world lost a rock legend last Friday, February 25th, 2022: Taylor Hawkins Foo Fighters drummer. With a career that began in 1994 and ended just a few days ago, Taylor Hawkins has been one of the most significant figures in rock history, and the world is mourning his loss. In this post, we’ll explore some of the highlights of Taylor’s life and career, discuss what might have caused his sudden passing, and pay tribute to one of the greatest drummers of all time.
Taylor Hawkins’ Life and Career
Taylor Hawkins Foo Fighters’ Early Life
Hawkins was born in Fort Worth, Texas, on February 17, 1972 to parents who were friends with rock legend Jim Morrison. After a short period living in Chicago, his family moved to Laguna Beach, California where he attended Laguna Beach High School and graduated in 1990.
Taylor Hawkins Foo Fighters’ Career
After graduating high school he became involved with his first band: Sylvia. His approach to the big leagues came in 1995 when Hawkins accompanied Morissette on her Jagged Little Pill and Can’t Not tours. He appeared in the videos for You Oughta Know, All I Really Want, and You Learn.
In Los Angeles, he befriended guitarist Dave Grohl at a friend’s birthday party only to discover that they shared common interests such as punk rock music and hanging out at all-ages shows.
So when the Foo Fighters called him after losing their drummer, William Goldsmith, he knew it was his chance. Dave Grohl was surprised when Taylor offered himself for the job—after all, who would choose a relatively unknown band over being a well-paid session player? Luckily for us, Taylor did just that. He wanted to be in a rock band, not a backing musician. From that decision, Taylor was famous as Taylor Hawkins Foo Fighters.
When The Colour and the Shape was released on May 20, 1997, the band’s lineup had changed from that of their first album. Taylor Hawkins was now the drummer, and he brought a different color to Foo Fighters in his role as a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist.
On the Colour and the Shape album, Hawkins sang lead vocals on “Have a Cigar”, a cover of Pink Floyd’s classic. His interpretation of this song also earned him a chance to sing with Brian May of Queen on “Mission Impossible 2″‘s soundtrack. He also recorded vocals for “Life of Illusion” by Joe Walsh and “Sunday Rain”, among other songs. He also contributed to the band’s songwriting, and was listed as a co-writer on every album since “There Is Nothing Left to Lose”.
Outside of the Foo Fighters, he’s been an incredibly restless artist—even though he’s incredibly humble about it. In 2006, he started a solo career with the group Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders, where he met Chris Chaney, his bandmate from his days touring with Alanis Morissette. Together they recorded three albums.
Then there’s Chevy Metal, a much more informal project that allowed Taylor to flex his rock chops by playing his favorite songs from Black Sabbath, Queen, and Van Halen, among others. The project took on a little more formality in its mutation into The Birds of Satan, which featured Mick Murphy instead of Brent Woods on guitar (Woods was in Chevy Metal). With Murphy, Taylor had the pleasure of recording a self-titled album in 2014.
Legend Hawkins‘ final performance with the Foo Fighters before his death was at the Lollapalooza Argentina festival on March 20, 2022. He took part in the drum battle with Taylor Hawkins and Taylor’s two sidekicks. Grohl said that Hawkins’ last performance with them was “his finest one yet”.
Taylor Hawkins’ Cause of Death – Still A Mystery
Taylor Hawkins Foo Fighters drummer died this past Friday, March 25nd. A statement posted to the band’s social media late Friday and sent by its representative confirmed the death. This announcement was a huge shock to all musicians and fans around the world, because at that time, Foo Fighters were set to perform in Bogotá at the Festival Estéreo Picnic, according to several reports.
The band’s representatives didn’t immediately respond to HuffPost’s requests for comment Saturday afternoon. Local firefighters said they received a report Friday evening about a patient with chest pain at a hotel north of the city, according to a statement from Bogotá’s secretary of health. An ambulance was sent to the scene, and responders found a 44-year-old private health provider there who had been providing treatment but wasn’t able to revive Hawkins.
Bogotá’s fire department and local authorities responded to the scene and later provided the information to the Attorney General’s Office, which released its own report Saturday. That report said a urine toxicology test found 10 substances, including THC, tricyclic antidepressants, benzodiazepines and opioids. The cause of death was still under investigation.
